Blue Bird Tattoo Studio Hosts Annual “Self Care Saturday” Flash Day Fundraiser Benefiting Safe Home

Blue Bird Tattoo Studio Hosts Annual “Self Care Saturday” Flash Day Fundraiser Benefiting Safe Home

Hanover, PAYWCA Hanover Safe Home will once again receive community support through Blue Bird Tattoo Studio’s annual “Self Care Saturday” Flash Day fundraiser on Saturday, May 30. The event combines tattoo artistry, community connection, and charitable giving to support individuals impacted by domestic violence and human trafficking.

Hosted annually since the studio opened in 2020, Self Care Saturday was originally created as an alternative to traditional Friday the 13th tattoo specials. Information for this release was provided by Missi Blue, owner of Blue Bird Tattoo Studio, who shared the inspiration behind the event and its continued impact on the Hanover community.

“It started as an alternative to Friday the 13th tattoos,” Blue said. “Saturday gives people a better option, and we wanted the designs to offer something different too. In our opinion, treating yourself to a tattoo is self care.”

This year’s event will feature custom flash sheets created by every artist on the Blue Bird team, including artists with typically closed books. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive tattoos from fan-favorite artists including Missi Blue and Vicky Stoner, along with the studio’s full team of artists.

Special guest Nikki Vlahos of Skin Vixxen will also join the event, offering heart freckle tattoos, consultations for inkless scar and stretch mark revision, and consultation scheduling opportunities.

The fundraiser is sponsored by several local favorites including Main Street Hanover, Britton Coffee Co., Little Fox Coffee and Books, and many more! With participating clients receiving exclusive perks, discounts, and giveaways from sponsoring businesses.

In addition to fundraising through tattoo services, the event will collect pantry donations for Safe Home. Organizers encourage attendees to check the studio’s Instagram for a current list of requested items. Safe Home has specifically requested that clothing donations not be included due to current overstock.

“Safe Home has helped some women who are really important to me,” Blue shared. “Women that likely would not be here today if it wasn’t for them. This event is our way of thanking Safe Home for the amazing work they do.”

Self Care Saturday has become more than just a tattoo event, it has evolved into a community tradition centered around supporting neighbors, local businesses, and nonprofit organizations.

“None of this matters if we aren’t also giving back and contributing to our community,” Blue added. “We must stick together and support each other.”

Community members interested in attending are encouraged to arrive early, as lines traditionally begin forming before opening. Organizers note that flash days are especially welcoming for first-time tattoo clients due to the smaller, affordable tattoo options and energetic atmosphere.

Main Street Hanover Awarded 2026 Environmental Action Grant to Enhance Slagle Run Restoration Project

Main Street Hanover Awarded 2026 Environmental Action Grant to Enhance Slagle Run Restoration Project

Hanover, PAMain Street Hanover has been awarded a 2026 Environmental Action Grant through the NiSource Charitable Foundation, presented by Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, receiving $5,000 to support the Slagle Run Environmental Education Enhancement Project.

Announced in recognition of Earth Day 2026, the Environmental Action Grant is a newly established annual program designed to support local environmental restoration and education initiatives across the state. This year, 11 nonprofit organizations throughout Pennsylvania were selected through a competitive application process, with projects evaluated by a selection committee based on their potential to create meaningful, community-based environmental impact.

“This is an exciting and forward-thinking opportunity for us to back innovative ideas that will bring about positive and lasting environmental change, and we’re proud to announce this on Earth Day,” said Mark Kempic, president and chief operating officer of Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania. “Also, we do not view these grants as one-time awards, but as the start of ongoing partnerships with each and every selected organization.”

Main Street Hanover’s project builds upon the ongoing UNT Slagle Run Stream and Floodplain Restoration Project, a major environmental initiative led in partnership with the Borough of Hanover Stormwater Authority and funded entirely by the York Countywide Action Plan (CAP). The restoration effort recently completed transforms approximately 1,600 feet of a previously degraded stream corridor into a stable, functioning floodplain ecosystem, improving stormwater management, reducing erosion, enhancing water quality, and restoring native habitat.

Funding from the Environmental Action Grant will support the installation of educational wayfinding signage and a viewing pad at the site, creating an accessible space for residents, visitors, and students to engage with the restored environment. These features will interpret key concepts such as watershed health, floodplain function, stormwater management, and native ecosystems, turning the site into a “living classroom” for the community.

“The addition of an educational component ensures that the impact of the UNT Slagle Run project extends beyond physical restoration,” said Moriah Tyler, Executive Director of Main Street Hanover. “By helping the public better understand how and why this work matters, we are fostering long-term environmental stewardship and creating a space for learning, reflection, and community connection.”

“This educational area represents a natural extension of the restoration itself,” said Eric Mains, Director of Planning & Engineering for the Borough of Hanover. “By incorporating interpretive features at the site, we can translate complex engineering and ecological concepts into an accessible experience for residents of all ages, while reinforcing the long-term value of investments in resilient, natural systems.”

The Borough of Hanover, through the Stormwater Authority and the adjacent landowner, Mr. Robert (Bob) Monahan, Jr.  who is participating in a land swap with the Borough, has provided key partnership in the restoration effort and will continue to support implementation of the educational enhancements. Together, the project partners aim to create a lasting community asset that highlights the value of green infrastructure and sustainable environmental practices.

“True community engagement means investing in meaningful projects that benefit us most where we live and work,” said Reggie Fields, Executive Director of the NiSource Charitable Foundation. “We are proud to collaborate with these outstanding nonprofit organizations and help them fulfill their missions through these vital environmental projects.”

Other 2026 Environmental Action Grant recipients include organizations such as the Allegheny County Parks Foundation, Grow Pittsburgh, and the Pittsburgh Botanic Garden, among others working to advance conservation, restoration, and environmental education efforts across Pennsylvania.

The Environmental Action Grant program originated in Indiana more than a decade ago and was expanded in 2026 by NiSource Inc. to include all six states within its service area. This year, the foundation will distribute a total of $250,000 in grant funding to support environmental initiatives.

      • Aldus Brewing will host local artist Pennie Highlands, a Hanover native and creator behind Sea Pennie. Using resin, shells, sea glass, and other natural materials, Pennie creates stunning beach-themed artwork that brings the beauty of the shore to life.
      • At the Gallery at the Old Post Office, visitors can explore forty vibrant works featured in the “Bold” exhibit, highlighting saturated, deep, and eye-catching colors. In addition, Andy Smith will have his clay monoprint studio open in the postmaster’s office, where guests can browse a wide variety of prints.
      • Fat Bat Brewing will feature the work of artist Sharon Benner, whose richly colored oil paintings are designed to evoke peace and capture the beauty of light across the landscape. Sharon’s loose, impressionistic style uses brushes and palette knives to create texture and movement in each piece.
      • The Hanover Area Arts Guild will celebrate both Art Walk and Give Local York with a special party from 5 to 8 p.m. Guests 21 and older can enjoy food, drinks, and entertainment while exploring the Guild’s Annual Spring Show. The Hanover String Quartet will perform from 6 to 8 p.m., and weather permitting, the courtyard will also be open for visitors.
      • At Little Fox Coffee & Books, guests can enjoy the work of local photographer Aimee Myers and potter Alecia Achimovich. Aimee’s photography captures meaningful moments in nature, people, and unexpected places, preserving memories through her lens. Alecia, a potter from Mechanicsburg, creates functional pottery with a range of decorative techniques, from folk-inspired hand-drawn illustrations to playful forms finished with vibrant glazes.
      • Sacred Heart Tattoo will host Crystal Hartlaub, a local artist whose watercolor, acrylic, and pour paintings explore the intersection of abstraction and nature. Her textured works balance intention and spontaneity, with both originals and prints available for purchase.
      • At The Serpent’s Key, the community is invited to celebrate Beltane by creating and sharing original spring-inspired artwork. Guests are encouraged to bring a piece to add to the community Art Altar at 5 p.m., enjoy food and shopping, explore the Downtown Art Walk, and then return at 7 p.m. for a Beltane Ritual Circle, celebrating the height of spring with flowers, fellowship, and creativity.
      • Warehouse Gourmet will host Sandra Desrosiers, an internationally award-winning classical artist and Signature Member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society. Sandra’s work, created in the tradition of the Old Masters through multiple layers of thin oil paint, reflects remarkable detail and realism. Her portfolio includes still lifes, portraits, florals, and landscapes, and her award-winning work has been exhibited in galleries across the country.
